Friday, 14 September 2007 Written by Kent Munro Sorenson, until SnapVRS partnered with Worldgate, was the only VRS vendor to offer unique and well-designed VRS videophones. Unfortunately, Sorenson has chosen not to make public their LDAP to allow Deaf consumers using non-Sorenson videophones to make calls via a phone number (as opposed to DNS or IP addresses). I cannot fault them for this business decision. The VP-200 is probably the best videophone in the VRS market today. SnapVRS's Ojo is a close 2nd simply because it wasn't originally designed for the VRS market in the first place, but includes a couple of features that Sorenson inexplicably left out, like video sign mail messaging and STUN server capabilities. Regarding Sorenson's interpreter quality, my wife and I find that perhaps two-thirds of the time, we get an adequately skilled interpreter. The other one-third of the time, we feel like we got a beginner interpreter. I consider Sorenson's interpreter quality to be the most inconsistent of the major VRS vendors. In addition, we often find that we have to wait for a Sorenson interpreter for more than 30 seconds, and sometimes longer than 2 minutes. I give a lot of credit to Sorenson for coming out with videophones geared to the Deaf community, which is something no one else can claim. However, Sorenson technical support has been spotty. I had router problems with the VP-200 for a while and it took a few weeks before an installer came to put in the SR-200 router. He worked hard for about 1.5 hours and could not get the SR-200 router to work at all, so I ended up having to use a very old router I had kept in my basement. It appears those VP-200's are sensitive and susceptible to finiky problems. But, when they work well, they work VERY well functionally.
